A job done at the wrong point in the year can undo itself. Pruning a shrub too early exposes new growth to frost, and treating a lawn before the soil has warmed wastes the treatment rather than the grass. That is the reason this site is organised by month rather than by task: the same job can be the right thing to do in April and a waste of effort in October.

How the monthly guides work

Each month has its own page covering the garden jobs and home maintenance checks that are actually relevant then, from lawn care and pruning to gutters, pointing and damp checks. Rather than one long list covering everything a house or garden might need across the year, you get the shorter list that applies right now.

Why one calendar does not fit the whole country

A frost date in Kent is not a frost date in Aberdeenshire, and advice that says simply do this in spring is not much use to either reader. Where timing depends on where you are, the monthly pages say so directly, usually with a rough north-south split. Soil type and the age of your house change things too, and the guides flag where that matters.

If you are not sure whether something can wait

Plenty of jobs are not urgent even when they feel like they might be. Where a task can safely sit until next month without causing harm, the relevant page says so plainly, because knowing you have not missed your moment is often as useful as knowing what to do next. For a specific problem, a cracked pointing joint or a lawn that has gone patchy, say, the Can It Wait? Home and Garden Urgency Checker asks a few short questions about the area of concern, the symptom and the current month, then gives a plain verdict: act this week, safe to wait until spring or autumn, or call in a professional. It works from the same general rules as the written guides, so it can be wrong for your particular garden or building, and it is worth treating the verdict as a starting point rather than the final word.
